The Many Common Causes of Neck Spasms

Neck spasms are painful, uncomfortable, and annoying. And that’s especially true when you take into consideration the fact that spasms can come about at any time.

Understanding the most common causes of neck spasms can help you prevent trouble in the future. Here they are:

• Straining your neck while working out

• Carrying a heavy object

• Holding your neck in an unnatural position for an extended period of time, such as while sleeping

• Stress and anxiety

• Dehydration

• Poor posture

Once you pinpoint the cause of your neck spasms, you can take steps to prevent more of the same in the future. For example, if your spasms are related to dehydration, drinking more water throughout the day is a simple solution.

Other ways to treat spasms include massage therapy, rest, ice therapy, heat therapy, and regular stretching. Experiment with all of these treatment options to determine which one yields the best result.

And of course, should your spasms persist, consider the fact that it could be related to an underlying medical issue. In this case, you should seek immediate medical treatment.
