If you've never tried salt therapy, you might be wondering what happens during a session, how you should prepare, and what you'll feel afterward. The good news is that the experience is typically simple, quiet, and relaxing.

Salt therapy, also called halotherapy, involves spending time in a specially designed room where fine salt particles may be dispersed into the air. While some people use it as part of their wellness routine, research on its medical benefits remains limited.

How to Prepare for Your Appointment

You don't need an elaborate routine before your first session. However, a little preparation can help you feel more comfortable.

Before arriving, consider these simple steps:

  • Wear comfortable clothing. Choose something that allows you to sit and relax without feeling restricted.

  • Arrive a few minutes early. Give yourself time to check in, ask questions, and settle into the environment.

  • Stay hydrated. Drink water before and after your session as part of your normal hydration routine.

  • Ask about the room. Find out whether salt particles are actively dispersed and whether you need to bring anything.

  • Discuss health concerns. If you have asthma, another respiratory condition, or concerns about salt exposure, consult your healthcare provider before trying halotherapy.

What Happens During Your Session?

Once you enter the salt therapy room, you'll typically settle into a comfortable chair. Depending on the facility, you may hear soft music, experience dim lighting, or simply enjoy the quiet.

Your main responsibility is to relax.

You can close your eyes, practice slow breathing, or use the time to disconnect from your daily responsibilities. Sessions vary in length, so ask your provider what to expect.

What Should You Expect Afterward?

You may leave feeling rested and refreshed, although everyone's experience is different. Salt therapy hasn't been established as a treatment for respiratory or other medical conditions, so avoid expecting specific health improvements.
