Infrared Sauna Benefits: What Happens to Your Body During a Session?

When you enter an infrared sauna, infrared lamps warm your body directly instead of primarily heating the surrounding air. This allows you to experience intense warmth and begin sweating at a lower temperature than you would in a traditional sauna.
As your body warms, several short-term changes occur:
Your heart rate increases as your body works to release heat.
Your blood vessels widen, increasing circulation to the skin.
Your muscles may begin to loosen and feel less tense.
Your sweat production rises to help regulate your temperature.
Your body loses water, making hydration especially important.
These responses may leave you feeling relaxed during and after your session. The heat can temporarily ease muscle tension, which may feel particularly helpful after exercise or a physically demanding day. Some people also find that sitting quietly in the warmth helps them slow down, clear their minds and manage stress.
Research has explored whether sauna use may support cardiovascular health, chronic pain management and other aspects of wellness. Some findings are encouraging, but larger and more rigorous studies are still needed. You should treat an infrared sauna as a wellness tool rather than a proven treatment for a medical condition. Claims that sauna sweating “detoxifies” your body are also commonly overstated. Your liver and kidneys handle most of your body’s detoxification work.
Start with a short session if you are new to infrared saunas. Drink water beforehand, limit your initial session to about 10 to 15 minutes and leave immediately if you feel dizzy, nauseated or unusually weak. Avoid alcohol before your session because it can increase dehydration.
Check with your healthcare provider before using a sauna if you are pregnant, take medications that affect blood pressure or hydration, or have a heart condition or another significant medical concern.
Used responsibly, an infrared sauna can provide a calming experience that promotes sweating, warmth and temporary muscle relaxation. The most immediate benefit may be simple: dedicated time to sit still, recover and unwind.
