Red Light Therapy: Benefits, Uses and What to Expect

Red light therapy exposes your skin to low levels of red or near-infrared light. Unlike ultraviolet light, it does not tan your skin or expose you to the same type of radiation associated with sun damage. Instead, the light penetrates your skin and may influence how your cells produce energy, repair damage and respond to inflammation.
You may encounter red light therapy at a dermatologist’s office, wellness studio or gym. You can also purchase masks, panels and handheld devices for home use.
People commonly use red light therapy to address:
Fine lines and other visible signs of skin aging
Mild acne and inflammation
Hair loss caused by certain conditions
Muscle soreness after physical activity
Minor pain or stiffness
Wound healing under medical supervision
Evidence varies considerably between these uses. Research suggests that repeated treatments may improve some signs of skin aging and certain forms of hereditary hair loss. However, red light therapy is not guaranteed to work for everyone, and researchers still need more high-quality studies to determine its effectiveness for many advertised uses.
During your session, you will sit or lie near a light-emitting device. Depending on the equipment and treatment area, a session may last several minutes or longer. You should not experience significant pain, although you may feel gentle warmth. Follow the facility’s instructions regarding eye protection and positioning.
Do not expect dramatic results after one appointment. Red light therapy generally requires consistent treatments over several weeks, followed by maintenance sessions. Your schedule will depend on the device and the concern you want to address.
Short-term side effects are usually mild but may include temporary skin irritation or discomfort. Follow your device’s directions carefully because excessive exposure can damage your skin. Speak with a dermatologist before treatment if you take medication that increases light sensitivity, have a photosensitive condition or are concerned about changes in your skin.
